With that in mind, follow this step-by-step introductory guide to acrylic pouring.

Your Acrylic Pouring Requirements

Before you start painting, make sure to get all the materials you need ready.

  • A 5×7 inches canvas panel.
  • About two ounces of Acrylic paint. The Recommended colors for this assignment are Titanium White, Silver, Mars Black, Aquamarine, Sapphire, and Amethyst.
  • Disposable Cup
  • Floetrol
  • A pair of gloves

Step-1 Mix the Paint

The first step is to mix your paint. Use one cup per color while mixing paints to avoid unexpected results.  Mix a part of the paint with two parts of Floetrol and stir slowly until you achieve an even texture.  The goal is to achieve a consistency close to syrup.

Step-2 Time to Layer Your Paint

Since you will be pouring all the different paints into a single cup, make sure the pouring cup can contain all the paints in the other cups. Pour about a third of the paints in each mixing cup; don’t bother if you have leftovers, you can use them for another painting.

Step-3 Get Your Canvas Ready

To prepare your canvas, coat it with the titanium white color. The reason for coating the canvas is to ensure the paint slide over the canvas smoothly and covers the entire surface. This way, you do not have to stress yourself while tilting the paint to cover the whole canvas surface.

Step-4 Pour the Paint on the Canvas

Now get ready for the exciting part of this project. We will be pouring the paint on the canvas. The easiest way to go about this is to place the canvas on top of the cup. Hold the cup and canvas tightly together and flip the cup upside down. Leave the cup in the inverted position for about a minute as the paint flows out to cover the board and starts to form patterns.

Remove the cup gently, and leave for another one minute as the paint solidifies slowly.

Step-5 Tilt the Canvas

Now, it’s time to start tilting the canvas to spread the paint to cover the entire canvas.  It is essential to tilt the canvas gently so that the paint does not rush too quickly. Tilt and hold the canvas on each side for about 10 seconds before tilting to another direction. The bulk of the paint should be in the middle of the canvas, spreading to the edges slowly.

It’s natural for some paint to run off the edges and once you have the style that you’re looking for, it’s time to leave it to dry.
